How Most Americans Try To Lose Weight

Fifty-two percent of Americans have successfully lost weight at least once in their lives, and Gallup reports many of their go-to strategies for weight loss.

When broadly grouping their strategies into either "just dieting," "just exercising" or "both dieting and exercising," Gallup researchers found that 47 percent of people who have lost weight say that they opt for both diet and exercise, while 32 percent said that only dieting worked for them and 19 percent said only exercise worked for them.
