F-Secure Anti-Virus 2012 Reviewed
F-Secure achieved good scores in PCMag's hands-on tests and even
better scores from the independent labs. However, getting it
installed on malware-infested systems was difficult, and its
DeepGuard behavior-based detection identified both valid
programs and malware samples as "suspicious."

Avira Internet Security Good, Not Great
The antivirus component is the best part of the Avira Internet
Security 2012 suite, with good malware cleanup and better real-
time protection. Phishing protection and parental control,
however, are not so hot. Overall it's a good suite, but not a
great one.

New Technique Detects Return-Oriented Programming
Modern operating systems don't make life easy for malware
coders. Features like Data Execution Prevention and non-
executable memory pages ruin schemes that involve injecting
malicious code disguised as data. Modern malefactors have turned
to a technique called Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) to get
around these restrictions. However, researchers Michalis
Polychronakis and Angelos D. Keromytis from Columbia University
have invented a way to detect this sneaky technique.

Is TLS/SSL a Flawed System?
Taher Elgamal, who formerly worked for Netscape and helped
create the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology that adds a
measure of encryption and security to Internet communication,
sees a problem with the current system. And the problem isn't
with the technology, oddly enough.
