Motorola’s upcoming 8, 10 inch tablets break cover

Motorola XOOM 2 tablets

Motorola might need to hire a roofer, because the company seems to have a few leaks at the moment. This weekend the folks at Droid Life, The Verge and Engadget have been one-upping each other left and right with photos and details about two upcoming tablets from the big M.

  1. Droid Life – first pictures
  2. The Verge – 10 inch tablet specs
  3. The Verge – Oh yeah, there’s an 8 inch model too
  4. Engadget – Hey would you like some photos?
  5. Engadget – How about a few more?

The Motorola XOOM was the first tablet to feature Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb when it launched in February. But it’s starting to look a bit… mundane now that Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, and other companies also have 10 inch Honeycomb tablets with dual core processors and 1280 x 800 pixel displays.

So it looks like Motorola’s next entries into the tablet space will provide a little something different. We still don’t have any specific details on the processors, but it appears that one of Motorola’s new tablets will have an 8.2 inch display while the other will have a 10.1 inch screen.

Both tablets will measure about 9mm thick, run Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb. They’ll each have 5MP rear-facing cameras and IR remote control features. They’ll also reportedly both offer 4G LTE mobile broadband options.

The 10 inch tablet will reportedly have an 11 hour battery, 1080p HD video recording capabilities, and a 1.2 GHz dual core processor.

The 8.2 inch version will apparently be called the XOOM 2 Media Edition and weigh about 0.95 pounds.

Asus Eee PC 1015BX with AMD C-60 chip shows up in Germany

Asus Eee PC 1015BX

Last month AMD rolled out several new processors, including the 1.33 GHz AMD C-60 low power chip with a TDP of 9W and Radeon HD 6290 graphics with a clock speed ranging from 276 MHz to 400 MHz. Now it looks like one of the first C-60 powered computers is up for order in Germany.

The new Asus Eee PC 1015BX is a netbook with a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and AMD’s latest low power processor. It’s up for order from Amazon Germany for 206 Euros (about $277 US) and up. The mini-laptop also has 1GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive.

AMD’s C-60 dual core chip is a modest upgrade to the 1 GHz C-50 dual core processor which launched earlier this year. The new processor should offer a bit of a performance boost, but it’s probably best to compare the overall performance to an Intel Atom chip.

Neither of these AMD chips is in the same class as an Intel Core i-series chip (or AMD E-series chip, for that matter). But they do offer much better graphics performance than Atom chips, with support for HD video playback and DirectX 11 graphics.

There’s no word on if or when we’ll start seeing netbooks with the new C-60 chip in the US.
