The TAG Heuer LINK smartphone runs Froyo, costs $6,700

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 03:49 PM PDT

 TAGHeuer Link

TAG Heuer has unveiled the Link smartphone -- a 3.5-inch snakeskin covered Gorilla Glass coated precision made phone that will certainly fulfill any James Bond-like fantasies we would happen to harbor.  Specs are a little unknown, but what TAG Heuer is telling us won't be likely to tickle anyone looking for a powerhouse:

  • Quadband GSM HSUPA enabled
  • 800x480 LCD @16,000,000 colors
  • 256MB RAM
  • 5MP camera
  • Android 2.2
  • And a choice of materials: 316L Stainless steel, Gold, Diamonds, Black PVD, Titanium, Rubber, Calfskin leather, Carbon leather, Alligator and Lizard

Clearly dated specs in the age of dual-core and 3D, but I doubt TAG Heuer is going after the typical Android geek with this one.  Especially with $6,700 as the base price.  It will fill a very small niche, and maybe we'll see one at a police auction one day, because this one won't be hitting the AT&T store any time soon.  Anyone at TAG Heuer who would like me to review this one, please contact me.  Pretty please.  Anyhoo, check out the video after the break.  You know you want to.

Android Quick App: Dictionary.com

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 02:38 PM PDT

Dictionary 2

Knowing more words and expanding your vocabulary is helpful no matter what industry you’re in. Dictionary.com is one of the most popular websites for providing definitions and with its Android app, you’ll have easy access to every word you can think of (and some you can’t) on the go. They have done a fantastic job with the app, making it extremely user friendly and feature rich, even including a helpful widget.

When the app first opens, the home screen will display the word of the day. If you swipe right, you’ll see the Spanish word of the day, followed by the Question of the Day and then ‘The Hot Word’, which displays an interesting fact. There is a search bar up top if you’re looking for a specific word. Along the bottom, there are various options including: Favorites, which allows you to save words you would like to go back to later, Search again, Voice, which allows you to dictate a word rather than type and More. In the More section, you can provide feedback, change backgrounds or share the app with a friend.

A great feature of is the ability to switch between Dictionary mode and Thesaurus mode. Whenever you have a word open, you’ll either see a D or a T button depending on which mode you’re currently in (if you’re in Dictionary mode, you’ll see T). Pressing the button will bring you to the other.

The Word of the Day widget is also handy. It simply displays the Word of the Day preventing you from having to go into the app. Clicking on the widget will bring you to the word within the app.

If you want to have easy access to Dictionary.com in a simple interface, check out Dictionary.com, available free from the Android Market. Find links to the app and more pictures after the break.

Hands-on with the Archos G9 tablets

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

Archos Tablets

Archos recently caused a bit of commotion by announcing two new tablets powered by Android 3.1 Honeycomb -- the Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9. Of interest was not only the 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP4 CPU, but also the price point -- $249 for the 8-inch version and $349 for the larger 10-incher. Throw in the intriguing prospect of a 250GB mechanical hard drive or 16GB of flash storage, and you've got two products that could potentially shake up the Android tablet market.

We got to try out both new Archos tablets briefly at the manufacturer's London press event today. Join us after the jump to find out what we thought.

Barnes & Noble stores to be first Angry Birds 'magic place,' exclusive to the Nook Color

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 12:53 PM PDT

Angry Birds Magic Places

If you happen to have a Nook Color and love Angry Birds, you're in for a treat.  Rovio and Barnes & Noble have teamed up and made B&N stores the very first "magic location" for the Angry Birds game.  All you have to do is play Angry Birds (the official Nook Color edition -- hackers with the Android Market version can't join the fun) while inside one of the 700 plus B&N stores and you'll unlock the Mighty Eagle character for free.  If you don't have a Nook Color, or aren't using the Nook Angry Birds app, you can still check it out and the Nook Color display at any B&N location.

It's part of Rovio's magic places based gameplay, which uses NFC, GPS, and Wifi location to unlock in-game content.  They have more planned, including an NFC phone fist-bump ritual that will unlock new levels.  To help understand it all a little better, check out the interview with Ramine Darabiha, product manager for Angry Birds Magic and the full press release after the break.

Google goes social with Google+

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 11:24 AM PDT

Android app gives full access, but it's currently in private beta

Google+Google+

Google's just taken the wraps off Google+ -- its answer to Facebook, more or less. More, actually, we believe, though for all the details and video's Google's just dropped, we don't get much in the way of actual hands-on usage.

In an oversimplified nutshell, Google+ is a series of groups, called Circles; trending topics, called Sparks; group chat (including video), dubbed Hangouts; and mobile, which includes location-based services, instant upload of photos, and Huddle (more group chat).

So Google's gone social, and not a moment too soon, though it's currently in a closed beta.

As far as the Android app is concerned: You've got a "Stream" feature, which basically is like Facebook's wall. Photos is well, photos. Huddle is group messaging. Will it finally be group messaging done right?

So that's that. Check out Google's full explanation of Google+ at the source link below, and check out video of the mobile app after the break. Other than that, not a whole lot else to do until more of us get invited.

Android 101: How to set default keyboard

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 10:16 AM PDT

Default KeyboardOne of my favorite things about Android is that there are tons of options for keyboards, lots of different styles, skins and colors that can be selected, and changing them on the go is extremely easy. The stock Android keyboard is not for everyone, and many of us like using other options like Swype, Smart Keyboard Pro, Thumb Keyboard or one of the many others that are available, and setting them to be your default keyboard is rather easy.

  1. Download and install new keyboard
  2. Go to Settings then scroll to Languages and keyboard
  3. Ensure that check mark is next to name of new keyboard
  4. Go to a text entry field (email, SMS, etc)
  5. Long press in empty compose space, select Input Method
  6. Select keyboard that you wish to use

It's just that simple. You can change them at any time, even in the middle of a message if you wish!
