Video walkthrough of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus navigation vehicle mount and spare battery charger

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 05:31 PM PST

Youtube link for mobile viewing

What we have here is an excellent video walkthrough of a couple of Verizon Galaxy Nexus accessories that should be available in the morning -- the navigation vehicle mount and the spare battery charging kit -- from forums member Aatrek.

Note it's a "Navigation vehicle mount" and not a "Car dock" or anything. It's a hunk of plastic that the phone sits in, that's all. No contact charging, no Bluetooth audio. In other words, it does not bring, as the kids say, the sex. The spare battery charger, on the other hand, chargers a spare battery. No muss, no fuss.

We got our first look of the phone at today's joint event in London's Mayfair district, so join us after the jump to find out what we thought.

Carrier IQ being grilled by FTC, but who's asking questions of the carriers?

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 01:26 PM PST

all sorts of evil

We're all getting tired of the whole Carrier IQ mess.  Analytics are necessary evil, but in this case done in a totally bullshit way, with little or no regard to how the consumer might feel about it.  No wonder it caused a huge uproar, which has now found its way to Washington.  Federal lawmakers have executives from Carrier IQ in front of them today, hammering them about how the software works, why it's needed, and how bad this is for you and I.  According to Mira Woods from Carrier IQ marketing communications, Carrier IQ has been completely transparent and has nothing to hide.  She also confirmed that Carrier IQ chief executive Larry Lenhart and the company’s senior vice president for marketing Andrew Coward met with regulators today to the Washington Post.  The FTC and FCC are investigating after being asked by Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) as a possible unfair or deceptive act or practice.  Yes, a bunch of people who may or may not really care about you and I are putting on a good show during an election year.  Hallelujah!

But that's all a load of crapola.  Where are the execs from the Big 4 U.S. carriers that hired Carrier IQ, and why aren't they sweating it out in front of some elected people or FTC bigwigs?  Yes, I said all four -- Verizon may not use Carrier IQ, but they collect the same exact information somehow.

This whole campaign against a small company from Silicon Valley that writes software for American cellular carriers is a lynch mob going after the wrong people.  The folks you pay every month are the real culprits here, and were just looking for an easy way to harvest information out of you.  They found someone smart enough to write it and went all-in.  When Carrier IQ gets driven out of business, and the bids go out for someone else to write the same style software, there will be plenty of takers.  Suits from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon need to be held accountable for this one folks, because they aren't going to stop until they are forced to -- even if that means contracting another company to do their dirty work.

'Almost CyanogenMod 7' ROM for LG Thrill 4G and Optimus 3D coming along nicely

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 12:30 PM PST

Thrill 4G

Have an Optimus 3D or LG Thrill 4G (the U.S. version on AT&T)?  Here's news you'll love -- Ricardo Cerqueira, an Android hacking mastermind when it comes to high-end LG devices, has released a new version of his "Almost CyanogenMod 7" ROM today.  Why the "Almost" tag?  Ricardo explains thusly:

This early release is based off the current CyanogenMod code, but unlike CM its components aren't public yet, so you can not build it yourself. Since being able to roll your own is a core feature of CyanogenMod, I prefer to think of this as something close to CM, but not quite CM.

If you're using an LG Thrill 4G, go download it now from the source link.  If you're using an Optimus 3D, you'll need to have the Gingerbread baseband installed (unlike the previous version of Almost CM) so you'll need to flash the current stock ROM from the LG Updater tool, then re-root your device.  That sounds like a bit of a headache, and it is, but it's well worth it as the new baseband brings along an impressive speed boost from HSPA+ networks.

This should tide us over until CM9 and Ice Cream Sandwich gets cranked out for the Cosmopolitan.  Go slow, read everything, and be sure to visit the forums if you have any questions.

Toshiba Thrive 7 review

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 11:02 AM PST

Toshiba Thrive 7

In the vast sea of Android tablets, it can take a bit to stand out. Toshiba managed to do so with the original Thrive tablet thanks to a bevy of full-size ports that no other tablet saw fit to include. On the other hand, a good many other Android tablets are thinner and lighter, too. But the Thrive bucked that trend and gained a decent following.

The Toshiba Thrive 7, as its name implies, scales things down a bit. Gone is the 10-inch display, trading it in for a 7-inch display. It's not terribly svelte, but neither is it horribly heavy, and Toshiba's seen fit to include a good number of ports and features unseen on other tablets. But it's also got a couple of quirks that have left us banging our heads against the tablet.

Head on past the break for our complete Toshiba Thrive 7 review.

The Good

We're loving the 7-inch size, and the screen and its 1280x800 resolution are excellent. Tegra 2 performs as well as ever.

The Bad

A bit of a big bezel, a bit pricey when compared to the e-reader tablets, and the rear camera is pretty horrid.

Conclusion

As far as 7-inch tablets go, you could do worse, we suppose. It's fast, the display is great, and so long as you don't intend on taking many pictures, you could find yourself plenty happy with the Thrive 7

Google+ update will allow you to initiate Hangouts from your phone

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 09:11 AM PST

Hangouts inside Messenger

The Google+ Android app has continued to evolve at a rapid pace. Back in September, Google added the functionality to be able to join a Hangout from any Android phone running Android 2.3 and up. One of the biggest frustrations, however, was not being able to initiative a Hangout from your mobile device. Google has finally brought that ability to the app by allowing you to start a Hangout from Messenger. If you've started a a Messenger group, you'll now see a camera icon that will initiate a Hangout with a simple tap.

Great features just keep coming. Google announced on their blog post that the app will update in the next few days, so keep your eyes out. They also announced that similar functionality will be brought to iOS so you'll be able to Hangout with your family and friends even if they have iPhones and iPads.

If you don't yet have the Google+ app, please find links to the free app after the break.

Android Game Review: Ozzy's Odyssey

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 08:33 AM PST

YouTube link for mobile viewing

Everyone, meet Ozzy. Ozzy, meet everyone. Ozzy is your typical robot (almost looks like a long lost cousin of Andy/Bugdroid), just floating around and doing his robot thing. Unfortunately for him, whoever built him left off that whole "ability to jump" thing. In its place, they gave him the power to suck things into his head using some robot technology, then dump it out at will. It is this that powers the engine that is Ozzy's Odyssey.

Ozzy's Odyssey is a physics-based platformer that puts you in control of the aforementioned Ozzy. Your goal in each level is to reach the exit while collecting as many batteries as you can. Batteries are what contribute to your score, so without them, you're just a jumpless robot bouncing from level to level.

The physics come into play namely when you've sucked something into that noggin of yours. The first one you come across is a barrel or a coin. (Something brown.) There's a switch somewhere you need to activate, but of course, you're either too tall to fit in the passage or you can't jump. Simply drop the item, push it, and sweet physics will send it careening into the switch, opening your path.

Like all games, the challenges and levels start off simple then become more and more difficult as advance through the levels. A few levels in you're presented with deadly spikes on the ground, but seeing as you can't jump, you've got to come up with a more innovative way to not get impaled.

If you do happen to lose a level, you're treated to a sad but goofy animation of Ozzy's head popping off, then you're free to restart the level. As far as I can tell there's no limit on how many lives you have, so you're free to try and fail as many times as you want before you inevitably succeed.

Ozzy's Odyssey looks great on phones and tablets both, and while you might feel silly holding a tablet while playing this, it really shines on the larger screen. The graphics are simple, but everything looks good, colors are nice, and it's really just a great gameplay experience. Plus, it's on sale.

Ozzy's Odyssey is 99 cents in the Android Market. We've got download links after the break.

HTC releases source code for Desire S Gingerbread update, and Sensation XL world versions

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 07:39 AM PST

HTC Dev

HTC has released the kernel source and other GPL bits for the Desire S Gingerbread update, and for the various Sensation XL versions across the globe.  As usual, average and well-adjusted people have no need for this, but for the true Android Geek and kernel developer, it's time to party.  They can use these sources to further customize ROMs and streamline the kernel for better performance, which everyone loves.  More importantly, it shows HTC is honoring their commitment and the terms they agreed to when using GPL software, which makes an old *nix nerd warm and fuzzy inside.

If you're in need of these sources, grab them at the link.  If you're using a Desire S or Sensation XL, hang tight while the magicians do their magic now that they have the tools.

Samsung Galaxy S II (I-9100) Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks out

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 05:12 AM PST

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Whatdaya get when you slap TouchWiz on top of Ice Cream Sandwich on an original Samsung Galaxy S II? Something that looks very much like TouchWiz on top of Ice Cream Sandwich on an Original Galaxy S II. The enterprising folks at SamMobile managed to score themslves an early Android 4.0 ICS build for the I-9100 (that's the original international version of the GSII). And just like with thie jump from Froyo to Gingerbread, we're not seeing any huge differences in UI. After all, it's TouchWiz On Top™.

Where you do see a little bit of a dfference is in menus, of course, as well as with features like Face Unlock. Check out the video for the whole thing, and hit the source link if you're up for some experimental flashing.

If you recall, over the weekend a few lucky Android Forums members were able to squeeze a Verizon Galaxy Nexus out of Best Buy a bit early, and guinnkevinr was kind enough to fire up his camera and shoot a few minutes of video for us to drool over.  We know what the engine is under the hood of this one, namely a dual-core TI OMAP and 1GB of RAM, but this shows us how she handles.  Nice and smoothly, that's how.  Kevin shows off how fluid and quick it is, loads up a game, and we get the see the web browser in action.  It's well worth checking out while we wait, and when you're done watching it (over and over) hit the source link and tell Kevin thanks!
