Steve Jobs 1955-2011

This week started with a shock: Steve Jobs, the Apple and
Silicon Valley visionary, (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/98769-long-live-steve-jobs-successor-to-edison-and-disney)
passed away. We looked at (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/99085-click-boom-amazing-how-jobs-failures-changed-computing)
how his failures changed computing, how he (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/98923-how-steve-jobs-killed-the-stylus-and-made-smartphones-usable)
killed the stylus and invented the smartphone, and even
speculated about (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/98791-what-would-the-world-be-like-if-steve-jobs-had-never-existed)
what the world would be like if he had never existed. It's
hard to put into words just how large (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/93914-the-technology-legacy-of-steve-jobs-former-ceo-of-apple)
his legacy will be.

iOS 5 released

On a more positive note, Apple yesterday released iOS 5.
You can update your iOS device by plugging it into
iTunes -- and then check our guide to (http://www.extremetech.com/computing/99625-ios-5-hidden-gems-and-features)

Microsoft defends its murder of the Start menu in
Windows 8

In a double-barrelled assault, Microsoft has explained
why the Start menu in Windows has met its demise, and
why the Start screen is better.

The history of Kodak, pioneer of film and digital
photography

What a fall from grace! Kodak, the company that created
photography, enabled Hollywood movies and home videos,
and invented digital photography, is now on the verge of
dissolution. Ironically, its own progeny -- digital
photography, a market segment that has been almost
uniformly painted in a positive light since its
emergence in 1991 -- looks set to deliver the killing
blow, too.

From punchcards to Siri: The history (and future) of input
devices

We take sweeping input gestures -- like pinch and zoom --
and ultra-accurate desktop mice for granted, but it wasn't
that long ago that they were invented. Here's a look back at
the input devices that helped build the computer industry.

The next stage of human-robot love: Meet Meka's anime robot
girl

When we first covered the emerging field of lovotics, the
science of human-robot love, we had no idea that it would
turn out to be one of the most popular stories ever
published on ExtremeTech. Now, instead of falling in love
with an odd-looking fur ball, there's a cute anime girl
that might appeal to your sensitivities a little more...

What is internet sales tax, and will it cripple e-commerce?

There is a lot more heat than light around the 'net on the
subject of a proposed Internet Sales Tax. It's getting closer
so it pays to learn more about it and how it may affect your
business and your purchases.
