HTC Vigor pictures leaked, looks like the Droid Incredible's big brother

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 04:06 PM PDT

HTC vigor

Pictures of what appears to be the HTC Vigor have been leaked out, giving another good look at the phone.  While the specs are all still a rumor, we can see a dual LED flash and a front facing camera on the big screen, as well as a rubberized version of the Droid Incredible's stepped back plate.  Of course the phone will run HTC Sense, and we assume it will be version 3.  The two biggest questions -- will it have an LTE radio, and when will we see it, are still officially unanswered.  With the rumored specs of a 1.5GHz dual-core Cortex A8 and a full gig of RAM, knowing that this one should be headed to Verizon soon will help relieve a little of the sting of not getting the Galaxy S II.  We can't wait to see it.  Hit the jump for another pic.

Galaxy S II

Samsung may have had to set their big shin-dig back a day to Tuesday because of hurricane Irene, but they know we're all ready and waiting for the Galaxy S II to hit here in the states.  To get our mouth watering just a tiny bit more, they have just sent out a couple teaser slides and a new video showing how the Galaxy S II simply rocks.  We can't argue, and we're itching to see what they have in store for the US carriers.  We'll know more Tuesday, join us right here at 6 PM ET and check it all out.  We've got the second slide as well as the video after the break.

Pantech Breakout another Verizon LTE Android phone?

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Pantech Breakout LTE

While it may not be sporting the best hardware specs, the Pantech Breakout may have have one big thing going for it -- it looks to be a Verizon LTE device, according to this shot we just got from a tipster.  That's not saying the specs are bad -- 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, front and rear cameras and running Gingerbread -- and it sounds like something we all would have dreamed about just six months ago.  Of course, the real news is the LTE.  We've been kicking around rumors of the Breakout since mid-July, and this is the first time anyone has mentioned LTE in the same breath. (Note the use of a SIM card and 4G mobile hotspot for up to 10 devices.)

Of course, we've seen this sort of thing be wrong before, but knowing another choice for an LTE phone may be coming is always good news.  We've got no date on when to expect it, but if someone is drawing up comparison sheets, it can't be too far off.

Thanks, Anon!

Hurricane Irene pushes Samsung's U.S. Galaxy S II event to Tuesday

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 01:33 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S II event

Just a quick heads up that Samsung has pushed its U.S. Galaxy S II event to Tuesday evening. Originally scheduled for Monday, Hurricane Irene's little jaunt up the coast made the move necessary (and thanks to Samsung for doing so).

We'll see you starting at 6 p.m. EDT Tuesday evening, folks.

Friday Freebie: Win a free Energizer inductive charging pad

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 01:07 PM PDT

Energizer wireless inductive charging pad

Since we're talking about keeping your phones charged today, let's give away a pretty cool charging pad. Energizer's wireless inductive charging pad (read our full review here) lets you charge your phone without actually plugging in the phone. OK, you still have to plug in the charging pad, but you gotta get the juice from somewhere, right?

To enter to win, just leave a comment on this post. Need to keep this one to the U.S. only (sorry!), and your phone will need to have an inductive charging cover to get it to work. Lots of rules, we know. But leave a comment, and we'll close up shop at 6 p.m. EST. Good luck!

Android 201: Using Labs in Google Maps

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 12:58 PM PDT

Labs  Labs

One of the best perks of having an Android phone is Google Maps and free turn by turn navigation for Android.  A part of Google Maps that we often forget about is the Labs section.  In Google's own words "Labs is a testing ground for experimental features that aren't quite ready for primetime.  They may change, break or disappear at any time."  They are also pretty darn cool, offering things like a map scale bar to estimate distance, or a measuring tool to actually measure it, and of course the pre-caching of an area we've talked about before.

Enabling any of these is easy.  Open the Maps application on your phone, hit the menu button, then tap "More."  Choose "Labs" from the top of the list.  Tap on any of the Labs features to toggle it on and off.

All three Galaxy S II's together is something to smile about

 US-branded Samsung Galaxy S II

As if the anticipation hadn't already reached fever-pitch for these oft-teased phones, it looks like we've finally gotten conclusive looks at each of the U.S. Samsung Galaxy S II variants.

Aside from the clickable button that's on the international version, it looks like the only physical differences between the US Galaxy S II's is the degree of roundness on the corners, with T-Mobile being crowned the roundest.

Also, I'm not sure if this is pure Photoshop fail or an indication but things to come, but the Sprint version carries Samsung branding whereas the other two have carrier branding. Only time will tell, we suppose. The good news is that we should find out Monday, weather permitting Tuesday. You win this one, Irene.

Oh, and look! There's still no Verizon phone in the picture.

Bluetooth keyboard review: Logitech keyboard for Android 3.0 tablets

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 12:01 PM PDT

YouTube link for mobile viewing

With tablets being all the rage these days, Bluetooth keyboards are rising in popularity. It's not that the on-screen keyboards are bad (well, some are), but having physicals key adds a whole level of familiarity, plus you don't have to try and balance a tablet on your lap or something.

The Logitech Bluetooth keyboard for Android 3.0 tablets seems specifically targeted at the Android crowd, and it works really well.

Pairing is a cinch, using the connect button located on the back of the keyboard, and once you're paired up, you're good to go. Typing is a breeze on the keyboard and works without a hitch. Hit some keys, letters pop up on the screen. Everything Most of it works as it should.

The only problem with Logitech's Android-centric keyboard are the Android function keys. Logitech was wise enough to include search, home, menu, and back keys, but their intended functions are murky, at best.

I'm not sure if the unit I got is defective or if the keys just aren't mapped correctly, but while most of the keys did something, it was usually not what you wanted. Back acted like home, search acted like menu, so on and so forth. It was an irritating little niggle that was the only smudge on an otherwise great keyboard experience.

Another cool feature is the keyboard carrying case that protects the keys. For transport, it folds up and becomes a carrying case for the keyboard, but once you're ready to get typing, the case folds into a triangular stand (with a ridge!) to hold your tablet in position on a table or desk. It should also be noted that the Logitech keyboard doesn't come with rechargeable batteries and runs on four AAA's.

More pictures of the keyboard and stand can be found after the break.

EVO 3D getting another OTA update

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 10:51 AM PDT

HTC EVO 3D updateHTC EVO 3D update

We've lauded HTC and Sprint before for the way updates are handled on the EVO 3D, and it's time to do so again. There's a little update coming over the air now. One addition is a widget, the other is ... something. (Update: Ooo! New radio.) But that the EVO 3D can continue to get minor updates without causing major trouble is a pretty big deal. Nicely done.
